Our story
The Gisèle Faubert Foundation Inc. was founded in 1999 by Ms. Gisèle Faubert, to provide financial assistance to families of children affected by illnesses or disorders
of any kind.
Ms. Faubert was a hard worker, and it was in 1999 that she was the lucky winner of a large sum of money. After receiving hundreds of letters asking for help, she decided instead to set up her own foundation, with the aim of contributing to the development of children who were certainly not as fortunate as her own children had been.
This kind-hearted woman’s values included mutual aid, love of others and respect; it was therefore essential for her to be able to give back to her community through the foundation, so the mission was an obvious one at the time.
A great visionary, Ms. Faubert noticed that the system enabled the more fortunate to have faster access to resources for certain pediatric treatments.
For her, it was unacceptable that children should have access to care or resources at different times depending on their family’s financial situation.
The Foundation is therefore proud to have donated over a million dollars to the families.
Adding a new mission
Sadly, Ms. Gisèle Faubert lost her battle with cancer in January 2014. She was fortunate to be able to pass away surrounded by her family and loved ones at the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Palliative Care Home; she was able to benefit from this service, but outside of her region, as there was no hospice nearby.
This type of facility offers quality of care, comfort, and a peaceful environment for patients at the end of life , and it’s important to consider that the benefits are not just for the patient, but also for the family and loved ones coping with the loss of a loved one.
In her bequest, Ms. Faubert asked the members of the Foundation’s Board of Directors to perpetuate her work. At the first meeting of the Board of Directors following Ms. Faubert’s death, one idea became clear: the Foundation needed to add a second mission to the existing one, namely, to open a palliative care home in the Jardins Roussillon area, to give the community the opportunity to benefit from the services she and her family had received during this difficult ordeal.
In 2016, bolstered by the heartwarming end-of-life experience of their mother’s passing, the late Ms. Faubert’s children took courage and embarked on what has become the Foundation’s second mission: to develop a plan to build and operate a hospice for the residents of the Montérégie-Ouest region.
The founder
Gisèle Faubert
1949 – 2014
Gisèle Faubert was born on April 15, 1949, the eighth of nine children. She grew up in the Saint-Étienne-de-Beauharnois area, then moved to Mercier in the late 60s. She was the proud mother of two children: a daughter, Dominique, and a son, Louis, who made her a grandmother five times over. Sadly, she never got the chance to meet her last granddaughter, born in 2016.
Ms. Faubert has always been involved in the Mercier community. Whether in various causes and fundraising campaigns, or in the organization of provincial and municipal election campaigns, Ms. Faubert has distinguished herself as a hard-working and kind-hearted woman.
On February 12, 1999, Ms. Faubert’s life turned upside down when she won the largest individual lottery prize ever awarded in Quebec. In the wake of this unparalleled opportunity, Gisèle remained true to herself.
Word soon spread, and requests for help quickly multiplied. True to her values of caring, in September 1999 she decided to set up her own foundation : The Gisèle Faubert Foundation Inc. whose mission was to support families with one or more children suffering from an illness or disorder requiring special care. To date, the Foundation has donated over a million dollars to these families.
In March 2013, Ms. Faubert was diagnosed with cancer and, despite the faith, conviction of a possible remission, and fighting spirit she was known for, she passed away on January 14, 2014, surrounded by her entire family, at the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Palliative Care Home.
